It’s easy to lose perspective in this life. With a few exceptions, mankind has spent it’s entire existence stuck on this tiny rock we call Earth. Everything we know – religion, money, family, love, Kim Kardashian – has all taken place on this planet.
We’re often inclined to think that this makes Earth special. Important.
However, when taken in context of the vastness of the universe, Earth is a tiny speck of dust floating in an infinite beyond. That’s pretty scary, but also pretty cool.
Carl Sagan once said, “The total number of stars in the Universe is larger than all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the planet Earth.”
If that’s not enough to wrap your head around just how big we’re talking when we ask “how big is the universe”, this graphic should help.
