Why was Macaulay Culkin famous?
Easily one of the biggest child stars and perhaps an even bigger train wreck; Macaulay Culkin was a household name across America. Cute, small and blonde, the boy had every making of a Hollywood heartthrob and that’s exactly what happened. But just how did Culkin get to be so famous? The answer really is quite simple.
‘Home Alone’. The wide-eyed Culkin played a bratty 8-year-old forced to protect the family home from robbers. We’ve all seen it, is was a holiday classic and nothing was funnier than watching an entire film of childish pranks played out on two unsuspecting robbers. The film and its sequel (‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York) made more than £500 million in the box office and it has become one of the most recognisable movie posters in history, all thanks to the cheeky looks of a young Culkin. Unfortunately, not all of Macaulay’s fame is down to his talented acting skills; after a few flops in the critics corner for his talent, Culkin made the grand decision to retire from acting at the age of 14 and later found ways to legally block his parents from controlling his million dollar fortune after fears they were manipulating him. In the shortest time span known to man this child actor went from being a no one, to a mega star, to a millionaire and back to a relative no one – all by the time he was 15!
Where is Macaulay Culkin now?
Where to begin with the latest on Macaulay Culkin?! No longer the sweet face of holiday joy and now the poster boy for child star gone wrong, it seems like Culkin has been in our faces for all the wrong reasons lately.
In 2004 he was arrested and briefly jailed for marijuana possession and then returned to court later in support of Michael Jackson at his trial. He then went onto to worm his way back into the public eye when he and girlfriend of 10 years, Mila Kunis, split and the world began to see the decent of a childhood star.
After the split, several picture were posted of Culkin looking very slim and worn, many equated his hobo-not-so-chic look with his history of substance abuse and it wasn’t long before rumours of drug addictions were swirling through Hollywood. His residence with troubled Libertines front man Pete Doherty did little for these rumours as well as his brief tour with The Mouldy Peaches, a famously Ketamine-influenced band. However things seem to be looking up for the troubled star, as he is now tottering all over the world on a tour with his comedy rock band ‘The Pizza Underground’.
Most recently, Culkin can be seen playing himself in the Compare The Market, Compare The Meerkat ad campaign.
It may not have always been sunshine and rainbows for Macaulay Culkin but whatever he’s doing, you can be sure he’s doing it with the same old stubbornness that got him into trouble in the first place, whether it me a comedy rock band or a heroin addiction, you can bet your bottom dollar he’s doing it in style.
